Our Story

The creation of an independent Tigrayan state is a historic responsibility passed to the current generation.

OPPRESSION

Despite momentary gains, including regional autonomy, the persistent resurgence of centralizing forces once again threatens Tigray’s identity and very existence. For the people of Tigray, nationhood is not simply a political objective—it is a historical overbearing. Independence is the only viable track to ensuring our collective survival, retrieving self-determination, and securing a rightful place among the community of sovereign nations.

Foundational Principles and Core Objectives

We firmly believe that these aspirations are unattainable within the current Ethiopian state structure. For this reason, TIP was established: to channel the deeply rooted desire for nationhood into a disciplined, organized political movement.

Founding of TIP

The Tigray Independence Party (TIP) was officially established in 2020 in the Tigray Region of Ethiopia. TIP was founded by a group of nationalist-oriented academics, activists, and former political figures who believed that the existing political leadership had failed to adequately advocate for Tigrayan independence.

Aspiration of Tigrayans

TIP emerged as a political vehicle to give voice and direction to the long-standing aspiration of the Tigrayan people for an independent state. The Ethiopian state, through historical and recent actions, has consistently encumbered Tigray’s right to live with safety, identity, and dignity—making independence not only necessary, but urgent.

Preserve Identity, Secure Survival

We categorically reject subjugation. We seek true emancipation and global recognition, with the ability to represent our civilization and interests on the world stage—free from intermediaries.

Respect for Sovereignty

We are committed to defending the territorial and historical Tigray passed down by our forebears. Sovereignty is non-negotiable.

Post-genocidal War Recovery

Independence is essential for rebuilding from the destruction caused by war and marginalization. We envision a future of rapid recovery, inclusive growth, and technological advancement.

Peace and Stability in the Horn of Africa

A strong, sovereign Tigray will serve as a stabilizing force in a region long marred by conflict. We aim to be both beneficiaries and contributors to peace.

Major Achievements

Tigray Independence Party represents the institutional embodiment of a historic national yearning. It stands not just as a political entity, but as a movement to restore Tigray’s sovereignty, protect its identity, and secure its rightful place as a free and self-governing nation in the global community.

Mainstreaming the Independence Agenda

TIP successfully moved the idea of Tigrayan independence from the political margins into the heart of public discourse. In the wake of the genocidal war, the party’s platform resonated with a growing segment of the population.

Diaspora Mobilization

The party has established a strong base within the global Tigrayan diaspora, organizing forums, publishing position papers, and articulating the legal and historical case for independence on international platforms.

Youth and Intellectual Engagement

TIP has gained significant support among Tigrayan youth and nationalist academics, positioning itself as a long-term alternative to TPLF hegemony and as the political voice of Tigray’s future generation.

Political Ideology

TIP is a pro-independence party rooted in liberal nationalism, advocating for Tigrayan self-determination and eventual sovereign statehood. Our commitment lies in creating a democratic, peaceful, and globally engaged independent Tigray.

Key Milestones and Struggles

2020 Regional Elections

TIP challenged the September 2020 regional election on a platform of independence and self-determination. Though it did not secure a majority, TIP won parliamentary representation, establishing itself as a legitimate political force.

Outbreak of Genocidal War (November 2020)

The war launched against Tigray by Ethiopian federal forces, in collaboration with Amhara militias and Eritrean troops, marked a turning point. TIP condemned the aggression as genocidal and called for international intervention and justice. The party has established a strong base within the global Tigrayan diaspora, organizing forums, publishing position papers, and articulating the legal and historical case for independence on international platforms.

Humanitarian and Diplomatic Advocacy

Throughout the war and the ensuing humanitarian crisis, TIP advocated for Tigray’s right to self-determination on the international stage, lobbied for humanitarian access, and engaged with the Tigrayan diaspora to build global awareness.

Post-Genocidal War Marginalization and Political Resistance

In the aftermath of the genocidal war, TIP faced political exclusion, particularly in processes dominated by the TPLF-led interim administration. TIP voiced strong critiques of the peace process, arguing it lacked transparency and did not reflect the will for independence.
