Founded in 2020

Founding of Tigray Independence Party

Tigrayans have always aspired for freedom, advancement and civilization.

2020

The Tigray Independence Party (TIP) is a political organization based in the Tigray region of Ethiopia, founded in 2020 as the political embodiment of a timeless and sacred aspiration: that the people of Tigray be masters of their own destiny—free to live under institutions of their own choosing, on the land they have called home for millennia.

Tigrayan Aspiration

This aspiration is not a recent reaction to injustice; it is a living inheritance.

Tigrayan Civilization

For thousands of years, the Tigrayan people have inhabited the northern Horn of Africa—what is now Tigray and parts of Eritrea—preserving a continuous and advanced civilization.

Mighty Empire

At the heart of this civilization stood Axum, the capital of a mighty African empire.

Enduring Legacy

The Axum Empire’s enduring legacy includes towering obelisks, the creation of the Ge’ez script, the Ge’ez calendar, the Ge’ez Kutsri/Ahaz number system—contributions that continue to shape not only Tigrayan identity but also African heritage.

Tigray Deserves Independence

Tigrayans Deserve Self-Rule

Our enduring struggle for self-rule has been fueled not by temporary discontent, but by the conviction that Tigray—cradle of an ancient civilization and heartland of identity—deserves more than what the modern Ethiopian empire can offer.

Axum was one of the first states to adopt Christianity as a state religion in the 4th century AD.

Axum became a beacon of religious tolerance: offering refuge to the earliest followers of Prophet Muhammad in the 7th century AD and accommodating the Jewish faith even before Christianity and Islam.

This profound heritage has forged in Tigray a deep consciousness of sovereignty, national pride, and self-rule. Inspired by the Axumite legacy, generations of Tigrayans have dreamed, fought, and sacrificed their lives for the right to govern themselves with dignity.

International Recognition for Tigrayans' Rights

TIP Is Not Simply A Political Party

Our party was established as the organized will of a people whose history demands sovereignty

Tigrayans’ Right To Determine their Future

While atrocities—including the Tigray genocide—have highlighted the urgency of this mission, the vision behind TIP predates these events. It reflects a legacy of an unshakable conviction that Tigrayans have the right to determine their own future—peacefully, democratically, and lawfully.

We Call For International Recognition

Tigray Independence Party stands as a beacon of hope and determination, calling for international recognition of Tigray’s right to independence through self determination and striving toward a future where the people of Tigray live in freedom, security, and dignity—on the land shaped by their ancestors and governed by their collective will.
